Workshops

All of our wonderful workshops are held in the jewellery school below the gallery with only stair access.
Each one is designed for ages 18+ unless otherwise stated.
Tea and cake will be served on all of our workshops, so let us know of any dietary requirements.

No refunds within one month of chosen workshop start date. Should there not be minimum numbers for workshops to run within two weeks full refunds will be given and students notified.

Wire Wrapping With Angela Askins

18th August -
10:30am to 4:30pm

Come and spend a day making beautiful wire wrapped jewellery with Angela Askins at the Nottingham Jewellery School.
In this first wire wrapping workshop you will learn how to handle the materials and wire, make simple shapes, attach beads and leave with a completed pair of earings and a bangle. You will be using copper, silver plated and brass wire. All equipment, wire and beads is provided but if sterling silver is required this will be at extra cost. Refreshments are provided during the day, please tell the school or tutor of any dietary requirements. 

Alternative Stone Setting with Dave Gelder

25th August -
10:30am to 4:30pm

This workshop runs over six hours and focuses on not only making an alternative setting but also cutting a soft stone to fit. Basic jewellery making foundations are needed to complete this workshop but again the importance of correct hand techniques will be part of the focus.

Life Drawing with Oliver Lovley

4th September - 6:30pm to 11th December - 9:00pm

Exercise your drawing or start as you mean to go on studying the human figure with Oliver Lovley BA Hons, SGFA in the comfortable surroundings of the downstairs gallery space at Focus Gallery in Nottingham. At each session you can choose to receive individual guidance from Oliver regarding mark-making, observational drawing, composition and other practical aspects of drawing. The drop-in style sessions will be designed to develop your individual artistic interests and allow you to grow as an expressive artist at your own pace.

2½ hour 'drop-in' sessions running on Tuesday evenings from September to December, 6:30pm to 9:00pm (arrive whenever you wish during the session) £13 per person.
Art materials, tuition, and refreshments included. You are welcome to bring your own alcohol or soft drinks.

Wax Carving with Loree Bologna

8th September -
10:30am to 4:30pm

Join Loree on this wonderful two-part workshop into wax carving. You will need to attend both sessions to finish your piece/s of jewellery so must be available on Saturday 8th September and Saturday 29th September.
In this introductory course you will learn some of the basic wax carving skill, which will allow you to design and make at least one piece of jewellery.
You will learn how to carve, file shape and texture a piece of wax which will then be cast into the metal of your choice. There will be an additional cost for your chosen cast metal, which will be based on the weight of your piece so please take this into consideration (charges for casting will be at trade value).
The waxes will then be sent off to be cast and on the second part of the class you will learn how to finish the raw casting into a beautiful unique creation. Cake and refreshments served but please bring your own lunch.

£150 per person inclusive of both days.

This is a six week class in all things jewellery. Suitable for beginners up to more experienced makers. We'll cover all the basics of silver smithing and an introduction to jewellers tools and techniques to allow you to create your own pieces of jewellery and metal work. Working in a fully equipped jewellery studio you can try your hand at sawing, drilling, hammering, texturing, enamelling, torch soldering and fusing, finishing, polishing and more. Learn new skills or bring along your own projects to work on. Alys will be on hand to demonstrate techniques, guide and advise you.

Enamelling on Copper with Alys Power

15th September -

A really fun day with plenty of techniques to try your hand at, enamelling is easy and addictive. In this workshop you will learn to produce wonderful layers of colour and pattern using sifted enamel onto copper.
Create unique and decorative pieces that can be made into a pieces of wearable jewellery.

Tea and cake provided but bring your own lunch.

William Morris Inspired Pin with Rosie Deegan

22nd September -
10:30am to 4:30pm

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful” –William Morris. 

In this workshop you will hand-pierce one of William Morris’s famous repeating pattern designs into a piece of sheet copper. Choose one pattern from some of his most popular designs; ‘Strawberry Thief’, ‘Golden Lily’ and ‘Sunflower’ and watch it turn into a beautiful piece of art as you cut the pattern out with a jewellers saw. You will then use needle files, wet & dry sandpaper and traditional metalwork finishing processes until your piece is ready for you to solder a silver pin on the back, so then you can go home with a beautiful (and useful!) stick pin to wear however you want. *Options are available for you to have your finished pin silver plated or 24ct gold plated at an additional cost of £20-£50 (payable to the artist on the day). Plating takes 3-4 weeks and will be posted back to you by Royal Mail Special Delivery which will be covered in your cost.

Improvers Silver Smithing with Alys Power

6th October -

Aimed at anyone wanting to improve and expand on their silver smithing skills.

Set in the well equipped professional jewellery studio at Focus Gallery facilities are availble for you to pierce, drill, file, polish, solder, texture, stamp and design and create your own bespoke jewellery piece. Bring a project or two to work on or try something new with some support and guidence.

This class is aimed at those who have already done a class or two at Nottingham Jewellery School or who already have some jewellery making experience so we won't be covering the basic techniques leaving us lots of time to have a go at some more advanced processes.

The day is tailored around you and your needs so let me know what you would like to spend the day doing and I will make sure we have the right tools and materials available on the day.
 

How to Approach galleries workshop

Join a group of like minded creatives on this workshop as we look into the do's and don't's of how to approach a gallery professionally and appropriately. What to send out when and how to get noticed in this competitive market.

Ceramic Jewellery With Sarah Burton

13th October -
10:30am to 12:30pm

Design, make and decorate up to 6 pieces of ceramic Jewellery.

Sarah will show you how to make a variety of different shapes of necklaces and brooches using a series of cutters and templates. You can decorate your creations with different textures and paint them with underglazes on the day. Your necklaces/brooches will then be glazed with a transparent glaze and fired ready for you to collect from the Focus Gallery a few weeks later. Bring with you any design ideas you may have for necklaces and/or brooches?  Think about textures and colours and look around your day to day environment for inspiration. Alternatively get ideas on the day from the ‘Bits and Bobs Box’ that Sarah will bring along to inspire your creativity.

Design, make and decorate up to 6 ceramic buttons/brooches.

Sarah will show you how to make a variety of different shapes of buttons and brooches using a series of cutters and templates. You can decorate your creations with different textures and paint them with underglazes on the day. Your buttons/brooches will then be glazed with a transparent glaze and fired for you ready to collect from Focus Gallery a few weeks later. Bring with you any design ideas you may have – do you have a knitted cardigan that needs those special buttons or a jacket that would look great with a unique brooch?  Alternatively get ideas on the day from the ‘Bits and Bobs Box’ that Sarah will bring along to inspire your creativity.

 

Glass Fusing Taster with Stevie Davies

An introduction to Glass Fusing techniques used to make Jewellery and unique cabochons.

After being taking through the process of cutting glass, you will enjoy layering small pieces of coloured glass with copper elements and Dichroic sparkle. You can create at least 2-4 items depending on your chosen designs and finishes. Materials included. Pendants will hang on ribbon and earrings/studs will be finished with Sterling Silver Findings. Your work will be taken by Stevie to her studio to be fired, cleaned, finished and posted/delivered to you approximately 2 weeks after the workshop.

Fold Formed Jewellery with Helen Domleo

27th October -
10:30am to 4:30pm

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those wanting to learn a new skill.

Charles Lewton-Brain invented fold forming and it completely revolutionized the way you could make unique, organic, textured, 3D jewellery with basic tools. On this course you will learn how to fold, hammer, anneal and finally open up your pieces to reveal unique sculptural designs.

You will begin by learning some basic fold forming techniques before moving onto more complex processes using not only hammers but also a rolling mill. We will explore single folds first before progressing onto multiple folds. You will go away with a good knowledge of several different fold forming techniques.
All tools and copper will be provided for you to master this technique, silver will be available at cost if you wish to make your designs in silver.
