Workshops

Focus Gallery runs the Nottingham Jewellery School downstairs so you to learn new skills and have an enjoyable day creating something totally unique and beautiful. Cake and refreshments are served during the day while you while away the hours on your new projects. These workshops are suitable for 18 years + and are held in our ground floor workshop with only stair access.

Russian Filigree Ring with Melody Unchained

1st July -
10:30am to 4:30pm

Enjoy a fascinating introduction to the ancient art of Russian Filigree.  On this workshop, you will be provided with sufficient  Hallmark Quality Silver to make a beautiful Filigree ring, with traditional recipe Russian Filigree Solder Powder.  You will measure for ring size, design your ring, and size the actual ring to fit, then final polishing ready to wear.

Open to endless possibilities in design, Russian Filigree is a timeless art form which will always look on trend.

Previous experience in soldering is required, and the pace will be fairly intensive to complete the ring within the day, therefore making this an intermediate skills workshop.

If you generally need magnification for detail work, it is advisable to bring your spectacles or optivisor etc. with you as these will not be provided.

Materials included in cost. Additional materials available for separate purchase on the day if desired. Refreshments provided.  Please bring your own lunch.

Traditional Stone Settings with Dave Gelder

8th July -
10:30am to 4:30pm

This wonderful six hour workshop covers traditional stone settings such as claw, rub over and rivet settings. You are able to choose to concentrate on on setting or complete up to three. All materials and expert tuition are provided for the workshop on the day.

Refreshments served throughout the day but please bring your own lunch.
The workshop in down a set of stairs so please be aware.

There is also another workshop a week later for alternative settings (also £110). For booking on to both workshops cost is £195 (10% discounted)

Alternative Stone Setting with Dave Gelder

This wonderful six hour follow up workshop after traditional stone settings concentrates on alternative settings. You will learn to make one setting, cutting a stone to fit within your setting and finishing. All materials and expert tuition are provided for the workshop on the day.

A really fun day with plenty to try, enamelling is easy and addictive. In this workshop you will learn to produce wonderful layers of colour and pattern using sifted enamel onto copper.
Create a unique and decorative piece that can be made into a piece of wearable jewellery.

Beginners Claw Setting with Vivien Bowling

This wonderful introduction to stone setting is suitable for complete beginners and up.  This workshop uses beautiful found objects such as beach glass along with sterling silver, copper and bronze to create some lovely settings.

Fused Glass Jewellery Taster with Stevie Davies

19th August -

An introduction to Glass Fusing techniques used to make Jewellery and unique cabochons.

After being taking through the process of cutting glass, you will enjoy layering small pieces of coloured glass with copper elements and Dichroic sparkle. You can create at least 2-4 items depending on your chosen designs and finishes. Materials included.  Pendants will hang on ribbon and earrings/studs will be finished with Sterling Silver Findings. Your work will be taken by Stevie to her studio to be fired, cleaned, finished and posted/delivered to you approximately 2 weeks after the workshop.

This is a six week class in all things jewellery. Suitable for beginners up to more experienced makers. We'll cover all the basics of silver smithing and an introduction to jewellers tools and techniques to allow you to create your own pieces of jewellery and metal work. Working in a fully equipped jewellery studio you can try your hand at sawing, drilling, hammering, texturing, enamelling, torch soldering and fusing, finishing, polishing and more. Learn new skills or bring along your own projects to work on. Alys will be on hand to demonstrate techniques, guide and advise you.

Keum Boo Pendant with Ruth Wiseman

9th September -
10:30am to 4:30pm

Spend a day with Ruth creating something magical using the ancient Korean art of Keum Boo.
Working with a pre-cut shape you will learn the wonderful techniques of applying the Keum Boo method which is the fusing of 24kt gold to Argentum silver. You will then be able to texture your piece with various silversmithing tools and rolling mills. After you are happy with the texture you will finish your piece using tools and polishers for a bright or patinated finish.
Price includes materials to create one full pendant.  If time allows you may create another (materials will cost extra for second piece).

Introduction to Chasing & Repousse with Melody Unchained

16th September -
10:30am to 4:30pm

This is a basic introduction to the classical art of Chasing & Repousse, creative stylised form using chasing tools in the Italian method. You will learn how a design can be taken from a 2D drawing to a 3D form, the considerations required for design, how to approach and utilise the tools, then cut out the image to use in wearable jewellery. You will be provided with sufficient copper sheet to make a simple pair of earrings or pendant to take home with you.

This workshop is quite physical and if you have any health concerns, it would be recommended to speak with the tutor first to assess your ability to participate.

Materials are included in cost.  Refreshments provided.  Please bring your own lunch.

Introduction to Electroforming with Melody Unchained

23rd September -
10:30am to 4:30pm

Electroforming is the process of creating a metal layer of a desired thickness onto the surface of otherwise organic items.  On this introductory day, we will discuss the chemical process and safety of electroforming, set up the electroplating system, before preparing various items to proceed with electroforming (with copper) to a suitable standard. 

Various interesting items will be provided for the purpose of electroforming, however, you are invited to bring along small items of memorabilia with you, such as a child’s dummy or first shoe, a tooth, a favourite flower (which should be pre-dried).  We will aim to create jewellery with suitable items so that you have something wearable at the end of the day.  Others, we will look at how they can be utilised as home display creations.

Three Rings in a day with Alys Power

Spend a day creating three wonderful rings in the equipped workshop at Focus Gallery. Use silversmithing techniques shown to you by Alys Powers to create your jewellery.

Slab Built Vase with Sarah Burton

7th October -
10:30am to 1:30pm

Join Sarah Burton and make a ceramic slab built vase in a relaxed and creative atmosphere.  Using the traditional hand building technique of slab building you will roll out a slab of clay and use a ‘former’ as a guide to make your vase.  You will then decorate your vase with textures and underglazes.  Sarah will apply a transparent glaze and fire your vase ready for you to collect from the Focus Gallery.

Ceramic Jewellery With Sarah Burton

7th October -
2:30pm to 4:30pm

Join ceramicist Sarah Burton in this new exciting workshop making your own ceramic jewellery.

Using earthenware clay you will learn how to roll out a slab of clay, cut out your jewellery pieces and decorate them with under glazes and textures.

Sarah will take your creations away, apply a transparent glaze and fire them ready for you to collect a few weeks later.  Cost includes materials and firings for up to 6 pieces of jewellery.  Bring some design ideas or be inspired on the day by Sarah's 'bits 'n bobs' box.  No previous experience necessary.

Silver Saturday with Alys Power

This will be our second #SilverSaturday of 2017. This one day jewellery making class is perfect to try new ideas and use the fully equipped workshop at Focus Gallery.
